Dear Mr. Weehunt:
We repacked four digester sludge recirculation pumps with injectable packing recently. I wanted to let you know how well your WeeSeal Cages worked for us.

Here is some background data about the recirculation pumps:

Four Wemco E5K-L Hidrostal pumps
2 HP motors
200 GPM flow
Packing size: 3/8 in.
Head: less than 15 ft.
Pumping anaerobic digester sludge @ 2% to 3% solids
Specific gravity: 1.0
Temperature: 85 to 105 degrees F.

Pumps History - The pumps are 15 years old and have gone through many years of maintenance neglect and misuse. At one point when the grit removal system was off line a lot of grit was pumped into the digesters. This grit has been circulating through the pumps for many years which has resulted in impeller wear and shaft wear. The digesters were never cleaned. They should be cleaned every 3 to 5 years. Recirc Pump #1 has a cracked lower packing gland which is held together with a hose clamp.

Packing Problems - When the pumps were repacked the packing would last from 3 days to 3 weeks. Much packing was being pushed into the pump because of excessive shaft and sleeve wear.

Injectable Packing Results:

Recirc Pump #1 - One ring of 7/16 inch packing on top and on bottom, a 3/8 inch WeeSeal cage and Chesterton CMS-2000 packing. Result - Packing has to be added frequently, usually weekly and sometimes daily.

Recirc Pump #2 - One ring of 7/16 inch packing on top and on bottom, a 3/8 inch WeeSeal cage and Chesterton CMS-2000 packing. Result - At first packing had to be added every day or every other day. Then after about a month it did not need anymore packing and it has been dry for a few months.

Recirc Pump #3 - One ring of 7/16 inch packing on top and on bottom, a 3/8 inch WeeSeal cage and U-Tek 400 packing. Results - Packing has to be added frequently, usually weekly and sometimes daily.

Recirc Pump#4 - First we packed this pump using U-Tek 400 injectable packing with a ring of 3/8 inch packing on the top and bottom. This pump needed much packing injected in it to keep it from leaking sludge out of the stuffing box. We pulled everything out of the stuffing box and repacked it with on ring of 7/16 inch packing on top and on bottom, no WeeSeal cage and U-Tek 400 packing. Result - Excellent results with little packing added. This pump has not needed any packing added to it over the last three months.
